The fluids became visible at the surface at the facility's flowline manifold. Secondary containment of the manifold was unable to contain the fluids at the surface, causing fluids to flow in multiple directions up to 10 feet away from the manifold. KPK responded on February 16, 2016, to the release, creating temporary earthen berms to contain released fluids at the surface. Excavation equipment began immediately removing contaminated soils to be disposed at a certified disposal facility. The excavation chased the contaminated soil in all directions until screening with the PID displayed results indicating clean soil had been reached. Soil samples were then collected at base locations from each wall of the excavation and a compsite sample made up of four (4) locations at the base of the excavation. Soil samples were analyzed for TPH DRO & GRO, BTEX, EC, SAR, and pH. Analytical results from the collected soil samples indicated the contaminted soil had been removed. A groundwater sample was collected and analyzed for BTEX, which showed that groundwater was not affected by the flowline release.
