Upon examination, a corrosion hole in the water dump line was discovered. The impacted soil was excavated. Groundwater was encountered in the excavation at approximately 7 feet below ground surface. A groundwater sample (GW01) was collected from the open excavation and submitted for laboratory analysis of BTEX. Laboratory analytical results, recieved on February 9, 2016, indicated that benzene, toluene, and total xylene concentrations exceeded the CGWQS at 3,630, 6,090, and 3,200 µg/L, respectively. The analytical results and excavation details are summarized below. Laboratory analytical results indicated that soil sample N01@5', which was collected from the northern sidewall of the excavation, exceeded the COGCC Table 910-1 allowable levels for TPH and benzene at 3,430 and 19.1 mg/kg, respectively. All other soil samples were compliant with allowable levels for TPH, BTEX, pH, and EC. Following removal of additional impacted soil from the northern sidewall of the excavation, soil sample N02@5' was collected and submitted for laboratory analysis. TPH, BTEX, pH, and EC levels in soil sample N02@5' were compliant with COGCC allowable levels. One excavation groundwater sample (GW01) was collected for laboratory analysis of BTEX. Laboratory analytical results for sample GW01 indicated that benzene, toluene, and total xylene concentrations exceeded the CGWQS at 3,630, 6,090, and 3,200 µg/L, respectively. Following the removal of 31 barrels of impacted groundwater, a second groundwater sample (GW02) was collected. Laboratory analytical results for sample GW02 indicated that benzene, toluene, and total xylene concentrations continued to exceeded the CGWQS at 603, 1,930, and 3,040 µg/L, respectively. Approximately 190 cubic yards of impacted soil were removed from the excavation and transported to the Kerr-McGee Land Treatment Facility in Weld County, Colorado. Eight hundred pounds of COGAC®, a carbon-based bioremediation product, were applied to the excavation during backfilling. The general site layout, excavation dimensions, and soil and groundwater sample locations are shown on the Excavation Site Map provided as Figure 2. The soil and groundwater sample analytical results are summarized in Tables 1 and 2, respectively. The laboratory analytical reports are attached.
