Approximately 40 cubic yards of impacted material were excavated and transported to Front Range Regional Landfill in Erie, Colorado for disposal. Groundwater was encountered in the excavation area at approximately 3 feet below ground surface. A groundwater sample (GW01) was collected from the excavation area and submitted to Origins Laboratory in Denver, Colorado for analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) by USEPA Method 8260B. Analytical results received on April 1, 2015, indicated benzene, toluene, and total xylenes concentrations were above applicable COGCC Table 910-1 groundwater standards. Approximately 110 cubic yards of impacted material were excavated and transported to the Front Range Regional Landfill in Erie, Colorado for disposal. Four soil samples (W01@2, E01@2, N01@2, and S01@2) were collected from the sidewalls of the final extent of the initial excavation area at approximately 4 ft. below ground surface (bgs) and submitted to Origins Laboratory for analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes (BTEX), and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) - gasoline range organics (GRO) by USEPA Method 8260B, and TPH - diesel range organics (DRO) and TPH - oil range organics (ORO) by USEPA Method 8015, specific conductance (EC), and pH. Hydrocarbon constituent concentrations were below regulatory standards in the four soil samples collected from the excavation area. However, analytical results indicated that pH levels in soil samples N01@2, W01@2, and E01@2 were above applicable COGCC Table 910-1 standards. Additional excavation activities were conducted to remove soils with pH levels above regulatory standards. Subsequently, three soil samples were collected from the north, west, and east sidewalls of the final extent of the excavation area at approximately 2 ft. bgs and submitted for laboratory analysis of pH. Analytical results indicated that the pH levels in soil samples N03@2 and E03@2 were within the applicable COGCC Table 910-1 standards. On March 31, 2015, a groundwater sample (GW01) was collected from the excavation area and submitted for laboratory analysis of BTEX. Analytical results indicated that benzene, toluene, and total xylenes concentrations were above COGCC Table 910-1 groundwater standards. Approximately 100 barrels of hydrocarbon impacted groundwater were removed from the excavation area via vacuum truck and transported to a licensed injection facility. On April 9, 2015, a second groundwater sample (GW02) was collected from the excavation area and submitted for laboratory analysis of BTEX. Analytical results indicated benzene, toluene, and total xylenes concentrations were above the applicable COGCC Table 910-1 standards. Prior to backfilling, 50 pounds of activated carbon were introduced to the groundwater table to mitigate remaining aqueous phase hydrocarbon impacts. The excavation area was backfilled and re-contoured to match pre-existing conditions.
