Approximately 200 cubic yards of impacted material were removed and transported to Front Range Regional Landfill in Erie, Colorado. Groundwater was encountered in the excavation at approximately 10 feet below ground surface (bgs). A groundwater sample (GW01) was collected and submitted to Origins Laboratory in Denver, Colorado for analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) using USEPA Method 8260B. Analytical results received on October 27, 2014, indicated benzene concentrations were in exceedance of the applicable COGCC Table 910-1 groundwater standards, causing this release to be reportable to the State. Approximately 200 cubic yards of impacted soil were removed and transported to the Front Range Regional Landfill in Erie, Colorado. The vertical and lateral extents of the excavation were determined using a photoionization detector to field screen volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations in the soil. Six soil samples were collected from the final extent of the excavation at approximately 8 feet below ground surface (bgs) and were submitted to Origins Laboratory in Denver, Colorado for analysis of BTEX and TPH using USEPA Method 8260B and 8015, respectively. Laboratory results indicated that constituent concentrations were below the applicable COGCC Table 910-1 soil standards in the soil samples collected from the final excavation extent. Groundwater was encountered in the excavation at approximately 10 feet bgs. Following the excavation activities, approximately 80 barrels of groundwater were removed from the excavation via vacuum truck and transported to a licensed injection facility for disposal. Subsequently, a groundwater sample (GW01) was collected from the excavation and submitted for analysis of BTEX. Laboratory results indicated that benzene concentrations in groundwater sample GW01 were in exceedance of the applicable COGCC Table 910-1 standards. Prior to backfilling, 264 pounds of activated carbon were introduced to the groundwater table to mitigate remaining dissolved aqueous phase petroleum impacts. The excavation will be backfilled and re-contoured to pre-existing conditions. A subsequent Form 27 will be submitted outlining a proposed remedial strategy to address remaining hydrocarbon impacts in groundwater. There was no indication that the dump lines or the water tank were leaking. All associated fittings were tight and working properly.
