Viewing Images

Suggestions on how to view COGCC Document Images on the Web

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission black and white document images are saved in  TIFF file format with Group IV compression since other image formats generate significantly larger files. To view these documents, you must configure your WWW Browser with a viewer that supports TIFF images and CCITT Group IV compression. Another approach is to use the new TIFF viewer plugins which will allow you to view TIFF images inline just like GIF or JPEG. The suggested   TIFF viewers/plugins listed here are to help in your selection and have been found to work in viewing these charts.

CASE 1:

If you already have a viewer installed on your computer, e.g. Paint Shop Pro or Imaging for Windows, all you have to do is know the directory where the viewer resides and attach it to your browser as a helper application:

For Mozilla:

1.      Click on "Options" or "edit"

2.      Click on "General Preferences" or "Preferences"

3.      Click on "Helpers" or "applications"

4.      Scroll down data type window to "image/tiff"

5.      Click on "edit"

6.      Click on "browse"

7.      Locate the directory in which you placed the viewer - select it and

8.      Click on "OK"

9.      When a TIF   file in the future is selected in Mozilla, the browser will launch the program and display the image.

For Internet Explorer:

1.      1.      Double-click “My Computer”

2.      2.      On the View menu, click “Folder Options”

3.      3.      On the “File Types” tab, find “TIFF” file type in the Registered File Types box.

4.      4.      Click Edit.

5.      5.      Select “Open” under “Actions” and then click “Edit”

6.      Browse the directory until you find the executable to use to view the TIFF images

When you first click a link to download a file, the File Download dialog box appears. You have the following options:

·        ·        Open this file from its current location

·        ·        Save this file to disk

·        ·        Always ask before opening this type of file

If you clear the "Always ask before opening this type of file" check box, you indicate that this type of file should always be opened with the associated program. The file is then downloaded to your Temporary Internet Files folder and opened.

CASE 2:

If you need to download a software package either select one of the example viewers below or use the keywords TIFF Viewers in a search engine like Excite. Follow the distributor’s installation instructions for installing the viewer on your computer.  Most of these applications will install into your system so that it is already configured with your browser.  If your browser does not allow viewing the TIFF images you may need to follow the configuration procedures listed above in Case1.

For Windows95 and higher:    Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and Imaging for Windows are accessories in most Windows operating systems. These viewers can be used for many of the documents. For large documents such as well logs it will be necessary to install a TIFF image viewer on your computer. You can search the internet for an acceptable viewer or download one of the viewers listed below. Some viewers work well for well logs but have trouble with multiple-page documents. Some viewers work well with the multiple-page documents but have limitations when it comes to large well logs. It takes some experimentation to find the right viewer for your requirements and computer configuration.
