Measure Distance

Right click in the map window. From the pop up menu, left click on Measure Distance.  The cursor will change shape. Left click on the point to measure from, move the cursor to the point to measure to and left click again. The Distance and Total Distance will be displayed in a map tip box, when you stop moving the cursor. Keep left clicking on points to continue measuring or right click to end measure mode.

Select Features Within a Distance of an Arbitrary Point

This section explains how to select map features within a specified distance from a chosen arbitrary point. This arbitrary point does not have to be an existing feature, such as a well.

Right click anywhere in the map window. From the pop up menu, left click on Select, then left click on Radius. The pop-up window will disappear and the cursor will have a circle off to the lower right. Move the cursor to the point which will be the center of the circle. This circle will define a specified distance from the chosen point. Press and hold the left mouse button and slowly drag the cursor away to the desired radius. A circle will be formed with a map tip (a yellow box) displaying the radius distance. The cursor may have to be stopped in order to read the radius distance. Note that as the radius increases over 5000 feet, the units change to miles.

When you release the left mouse button, all selectable features within the radius are selected. Click on the Selection Query button to view the selected features and additional information.

Select Features Within a Buffer

This section explains how to select map features within a radius, or within a specified distance of a feature, such as a river.

Begin by selecting one or more features, such as a road, lake or river. To select a single feature left click on it. To select additional features, shift left click.

Now that a feature is selected, right click anywhere inside the map window and click on View. In the View submenu, select Buffer... to bring up the View Buffer window. In the View Buffer window, enter the Buffer offset distance and units. To see the buffer, select a Hatch Fill Style and pick a color. Click OK and a new buffer layer will be added to your map. The new layer will be added just above the layer containing the selected features.

Left click on the buffer to select it. Right click anywhere in the Map window and click on Select. In the Select submenu select Within. This displays the Select Within window. Although several Map Layers can be presented, only 4 layers have features which can be queried. These layers are:

Select one or more layers (use shift left click or ctrl left click to select more than one layer), then click on OK. If Water Wells and Facilities are selected, all of these features within the buffer are now selected. Left click on the Selection Query button to view the selected features and additional information.

Note: Only the features within the buffer and the data extent of the map window are selected. Depending on a number of factors, such as previous zooms and pans, the data extent of the map window may be larger than the view extent.

Query selected features

This section explains how to run a query for additional information. After a feature is selected, such as a well, left click on the Selection Results button below the map.

Only 2 layers support queries:

The selection methods explained above may select features from other layers, in addition to the 2 listed above. That is ok, since only selected features from the four query supporting layers will be listed in the Selected Items Report.

Remove a Buffer Layer

Once a buffer layer has been created you cannot remove it. If you do not want it displayed simply click on the check mark in the legend to turn it off. Refreshing or reloading the page will remove the buffer layer but will also zoom out to the initial state view.
